S2M believes it is important to be a part of the community you work in.  We have been involved in the Garfield County 4H Fair since 1997.  The S2M Concrete Pump has made a number of appearances in the parade through the years and we are pleased to be listed as buyers of livestock from the 4H group. Our bright pump truck has also been involved in Glenwood Springs Strawberry Days celebrations.  In the past we have been the Glenwood Demons dedicated Freshman float for Homecoming Parades.

S2M supplied rebar at no cost to the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club Veltus Park Shelter (Sept 2009)

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — The Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club is improving the picnic structure at Veltus Park. And according to incoming president Joe O'Donnell, the project couldn't have been completed without the help of the community.  “With the generous donations of the vendors and the labor of the Kiwanians, we were able to do this,” O'Donnell said.  The Kiwanis Club meets at Veltus Park during the summer months every Tuesday for their weekly meetings, according to O'Donnell. The club installed new barbecue grills about five years ago, located near the existing picnic pavilion.  They've always wanted to have a roof over the barbecue grills, but weren't able to get it accomplished until this year when current Kiwanis President Bob Littler went out and got some community support for the project, O'Donnell said.

“Bob went out and got some local companies involved in helping out,” he said.  Littler's company, MPA Consulting Engineers Inc., did the design work and provided construction assistance at no cost for the construction of the roof structure to cover the barbecues.  But Littler was able to get contributions from several other companies - from Basalt to Rifle - to pitch in and complete the projects, O'Donnell said.  Myers and Company of Basalt supplied the steel at cost, Todd's Welding of Rifle built and installed the steel structure with their crane at less than cost, S2M Concrete supplied rebar at no cost, LaFarge Concrete of Carbondale supplied the concrete at a discount, and Ace Roofing of Glenwood will be supplying the roofing material at cost and will also help the club members install the roof.  Most of the labor was done by Kiwanis members and community members, O'Donnell said.  "Kiwanians have done a lot of the labor themselves,” O'Donnell said.

Todd's Welding of Rifle constructed the canopy in Rifle and transported it to Veltus Park the weekend of Sept. 19-20, and secured the structure in place.  It was a pretty big operation, according to Don Howanick with MPA Consulting Engineers.  “It was like bringing a house down the road,” Howanick said. “They got their big crane and lifted the whole structure into place in one piece.”  The city of Glenwood Springs Financial Advisory Board contributed $7,000 from the Discretionary and Tourism Grant funds to help cover costs associated with the project, O'Donnell said. Club members will also ask for another $3,500 in funds in January 2010.  However, O'Donnell estimated that with the community pitching in on the project, they saved somewhere in the neighborhood of $30,000.  “This is something that would have cost the city about $45,000 to do,” O'Donnell said.

The new steel structure measures approximately 20 feet by 16 feet, and is about 12 feet high, according to Howanick. The new roof will be an extension of the existing wood-framed picnic area at the park. O'Donnell expects the work will be completed sometime in October.  While the Kiwanis Club and the contributions of the local businesses and city made the work possible, the facility is open to the public.  O'Donnell was just happy to be able to finally see this project being completed.  “It's just a project that has been on the table for a couple of years, and we are finally able to get it done,” he said.
